The DUTTON family are linked to the McDanielson family by two marriages. The first was between John Wm McDanielson and Elizabeth Ann Dutton in 1872 and the second between John’s brother, George, and Elizabeth Ann’s sister, Alice, in 1875.

The CROSSLAND family are linked more distantly, through the marriage of Jane Dutton to Edwin CROSSLAND, but they appear to have retained close links with the McDanielson family until at least 1924.

John DUTTON (Snr) was born c1790 and died in 1822. His burial was at Stockport on 4th March that year and his residence is noted as Hempshaw Lane. No occupation is given but his occupation on his son John’s marriage certificate in 1838 (see below) is given as 'Forgeman'.

John (son of the above John Dutton) was born c1818, at Macclesfield or Stockport. It appears that throughout his life he worked as a Shoemaker (Cordwainer).

In 1838 at St Mary's Church, Cheadle, Cheshire, he married Elizabeth JACKSON, daughter of William JACKSON, a hatter, of Stockport. They were both living at 'Brinksway' in Stockport. They had five children: Sarah, Jane, William, Elizabeth Ann, Alice and Mary.

On the 1841 census John, Elizabeth and their daughter, Sarah, lived at Hempshaw Lane, Stockport. The family address in 1852 was 48 Wood Street, Stockport, but by 1854 they had moved to Glossop in Derbyshire, where John continued his trade and is found listed in a Derbyshire trade directory for 1857, at 'Bank Bottom'.

The 1861 census shows John with wife Elizabeth and daughters Jane, Elizabeth Ann and Alice resident at Bank Bottom, Barlow Bridge, Hadfield, Derbyshire. On the 1871 census he is widowed and living at 23 Hall St, Hadfield, Glossop. Resident also were three daughters, Elizabeth Ann, Alice and Mary. Lodging with them were Edwin CROSSLAND, with his wife Jane (nee DUTTON - see Jane's entry) and their children.

John died of 'Paralysis, 3 months' on 20th October 1877 in the Union Workhouse, Glossop, age 64. The informant of death was his grand-daughter, Mary Jane LAWSON, daughter of Sarah (nee Dutton – see her entry).

Children and Grandchildren of John DUTTON and Elizabeth JACKSON

Sarah was born c1838 in Stockport and married William LAWSON, probably in 1859 in Hayfield district, Derbyshire. They had four children so far known of: Mary Jane c1859 ; Thomas c1860; Elizabeth c1864; Wilfred Henry c 1883.

Mary Jane and Elizabeth have not been found in records after the 1881 census, but Wilfred is found with his parents in 1901 and Thomas is found on the same census with wife Margaret and brother-in-law Tom BENNETT, living in Hadfield. Wilfred married Elizabeth BOWDEN in Glossop district in 1903. They had one child so far known of, Elizabeth, born in Ashton-under-Lyne district, 1913.

Jane was born in 1841 in Stockport and in 1865 at Hayfield, Derbyshire, married Edwin CROSSLAND, son of Samuel and Ann CROSSLAND. On the 1871 census Jane, Edwin and their children were lodging with John Dutton and his three daughters in Hadfield. By 1872 it appears that the Crossland family accompanied by at least Elizabeth and Alice Dutton, had settled in Halifax. Jane and her family seem to have retained close links with the McDanielson family for many years after their arrival in Halifax, inferred by their witnessing some marriages and their residential proximity to the McDanielsons (particularly at Wainman Street, Halifax). Jane and Edwin's children were Eliza, Elizabeth A, Ann, Sarah J, Wright and Ruth Ellen. See CROSSLAND details below.

Jane died in Halifax on 19th April 1916, from carcinoma of the liver.

William was born c1845 in Stockport. His year of birth is estimated from his entry on the 1851 census for Stockport. No further details of William have been found.

Elizabeth Ann was born at 48 Wood Street, Stockport on 3rd September 1852. In 1872 at the Halifax Parish Church she married John William McDANIELSON. For details of Elizabeth's children, see McDanielson report for John William McDanielson and Annie McDanielson (born 1884). Elizabeth died in 1897 of heart disease, at the age of 45.

Alice was born in Hayfield, Glossop, Derbyshire on 1st July 1854. She is a direct ancestor of the McDanielson family. In 1875 at the Halifax Registry Office, Alice married George McDANIELSON (recorded on the marriage certificate as 'McDonninson').

Alice [Dutton]
Before her marriage to George, she had an illegitimate child, James DUTTON. At the time of the birth she was resident at 3 Well St, Northowram, where George's parents are thought to have been living, which may imply that the child was his. She was in any case already related by marriage to the McDanielson family, as her sister Elizabeth Ann had married George's brother in 1872. It is not known why she and George did not marry until over a year after James' birth, but see details for James Dutton and George McDanielson for speculation on this.

Alice died in 1935 at St Luke's Hospital, Halifax at the age of 80.

Mary is shown on the 1871 census for Hayfield, aged 13, which suggests she was born c1858, but no later record of her has been found. A Mary Dutton is listed on the deaths index for June 1871 in Hayfield, Derbyshire, but this has not been checked.

Children of JANE DUTTON and EDWIN CROSSLAND

Eliza was born c1866 in Hadfield, Derbyshire and does not appear to have married, as she is found still living with her parents in Halifax at the age of 40 in 1911 (her age is incorrect – she was 45). She witnessed the marriages of her cousins Mary Ann and Jane McDanielson in 1899 and 1907 respectively. She may have been the mother of a child, Minnie, whose parentage is not known (see below for details).

Elizabeth Ann was born c1867 in Hadfield, Derbyshire. In 1889 in Halifax. she married John GREGORY of Knottingley. They had three children presently known of, Nellie born c1891, Wilfred born c 1895 and Ida born c1898.

Ann is shown aged 1 year on the 1871 census for Hadfield, Derbyshire, but she does not appear on later records.

Sarah Jane was born c1872 and is shown on the 1881 census for Halifax, but does not appear on later records.

Wright was born in 1878 in Halifax and died in 1882.

Ruth Ellen was born at 26 Wainman Street, Halifax c1879 and was married in Halifax in 1903, to Thomas FAULKNER and the 1911 census records that they had three children, with only two surviving: Ruth c1908 (born Philadelphia, PA); Mary c1909 (Philadelphia, PA) and presumably deceased by 1911; Jack c1910 Halifax. The Birth indexes for Halifax show a possible fourth child, Aubrey, 1911. An unconfirmed source gives a fifth child, Wilfred, 1913.

Thomas Faulkner went to Philadelphia, PA, in 1904 aboard the SS Westerland to join his uncle, John Kelly (his mother’s brother). The ship's manifest suggests that this was his fourth visit in 18 years. Ruth joined him in 1904, returning in 1909.

Gertrude was born c1886 in Halifax and is recorded on the 1901 census as 'Imbecile from birth'.

■ On the 1901 census, a Winnie BAXTER born c1896 in Halifax is shown as 'adopted child', in the Crossland household. It has not been established if this child was related to Martha Ann Baxter (nee McDonald – see ‘McDanielson’ family details). The 1911 census shows that Winnie, now recorded as Winifred Fawcet-Baxter, was still resident with the now widowed Jane. An unconfirmed source suggests that Winnie was the illegitimate child of Polly (aka Mary) Fawcett, born Silsden, Bradford in 1878.

Grandchild of JANE DUTTON and EDWIN CROSSLAND

■ The 1891 and 1901 censuses record a grandchild in the house, Minnie Cooper CROSSLAND, born about January 1891. No parent for this child is identified on the census, but as there was no surviving male Crossland, it’s likely that this child was born illegitimately to one of the daughters. The most likely candidate for parentage is Eliza, as she was unmarried in 1901, aged 35. Illegitimate children were sometimes given the unknown father’s surname as a middle name.

On 2nd July 1910 Minnie married George Harold GREGORY, son of Mark GREGORY, at The Parish Church, Halifax.  Minnie’s address was Elizabeth Street, Elland and no father’s name is given.
